The World Cup keeps rolling, and Canada needs a win
After battling the 2nd ranked team in the world and beating them all over the field last Wednesday but still losing 1-0, the Canadian squad has a new challenge in the 2018 World Cup runner-up, Croatia.
Let the mind games begin! Canada’s coach John Herdman got himself in a wee bit of hot water after the Belgium loss, where he said the team would “eff Croatia.” It was a throwaway comment from a passionate manager, but leave it to the Croatian media to use it to help motivate their team. They responded:
All of this is noise that won’t impact the game either way. Both teams will be motivated, and if Croatia needs this type of stuff to get up for playing Canada, then their recent poor performance against Morrocco is still clearly in their heads.
Croatia “battled” to a goalless draw against Morocco, where they lacked creativity or bite to their game. They looked old and slow and a shadow of the team that came close to winning it all back in 2018. Sure they have some fantastic players in their midfield with the likes of Marcelo Brozović, Mateo Kovačić, and Luka Modrić. But if they want to beat Canada, they will need to find their game quickly, or they could be facing wave after wave of Canadian speed.
For betting reasons, we need to come up with a firm prediction. If Canada had problems with Belgium’s defence than wait until they face Croatia’s back line who can potentially give Canadian forwards the same kind of offensive PTSD. At some point Canada needs to finish on their chances or they are going to be in trouble. Cue Alphonso Davies, who might not be 100%, however, he needs to continue to be a threat and be the best player on the pitch. He showed flashes of it on Wednesday but there is still another level to his game.
Look for Canada to continue to press and keep Croatia on their back foot similar to what they did against Belgium. They are younger, faster, and play with courage, and Croatia will need to figure out a way to counter. Both teams are having trouble scoring so expect this to be a 1-0 game. Honestly, a 0-0 tie might be the best bet here. Why be conservative though?
- Match Result: Canada (+250)
- Draw No Bet: Canada (+145)
- Over/Under Goals: Under 2.5 (-145)
- Canada to Win and Croatia Not to Score: (+450)
All the odds point to a Croatia win. But we think Canada squeaks this one out and gains a much needed 3 points. There is value taking the underdog here.
Our Bet: Canada wins (+250)
