It’s officially 2025 and we are in week 13 of the 24/25 NHL season. We have seen some great games, power plays, goals and fights so far this season, especially from our Canadian teams. So, let’s dive in and rank the top Canadian teams from best to worst.
1. Winnipeg Jets
The Jets are undoubtedly having a great season this year. As the current league leaders with 27 wins and only 11 loses, the Jets have been breaking records since the season puck-drop. As they sit here at number 1, they can rest easy for now that they will retain this top spot.
2. Maple Leafs
Leading the Atlantic division, with 50 points and 24 wins, the leafs seem to be clinging on to a spot in the playoffs. Despite Auston Matthews recently saying he may not be able to move past his current injury, the Leafs are still able to hold their own at 6th place overall in the league an 1st in their division. But can they stay at the top?
3. Edmonton Oilers
It seems to be a frustrating season so far for the Oilers. As what should be a top team, Stanley Cup finalists last year, and with the invaluable McDavid and Draisaitl, we wouldn’t count the Oilers out just yet. Everybody loves a comeback. They just gotta dig in.
4. Vancouver Canucks
A frustrating season for the Canucks as they deal with injuries from Miller, Pettersson and Hughes so far. If the playoffs were today, they would make it as but a wild card. It seems like it’ll be tough to hold on to this position. The talent is there and they have the potential too hopefully injuries will be left in 2024.
5. Ottawa Senators
After a strong December, could things be looking up for the Senators? Fans seem to have some excitement heading into 2025 after their December 9-3-1 record has currently put them in a playoff position.
6. Montreal Canadiens
Another team who finished 2024 in a playoff-favourable position is the Canadiens. The Canadiens are getting scores from all four lines. Jake Evans and Emil Heineman are tearing it up. Alexandre Carrier is looking like one of the best acquisitions they’ve had. And with Patrik Laine, Nick Suzuki and Lane Hutson firing on all cylinders, the possibility of them reaching the playoffs this year is likely – so long as this momentum doesn’t drop.
7. Calgary Flames
The Flames started the season strong but now have slipped through the rankings to 15th overall in the league. They have missed the playoffs the last 2 seasons in a row and unfortunately if they continue the way they are now, they’ll miss it a third time.
