For the first time in the 2024 – 2025 season, the Montreal Canadiens sit in the wild-card spot of the Atlantic Division. As they continue to build momentum, let’s see if they can continue this to secure this post – season position
The Canadiens are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and this brought them into a tie with the Ottawa Senators for fourth place in their Division. They have an overall record of 24-19-4 after a late third period goal from forward Jake Evans, giving the team a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Jake Evans and Emil Heineman are tearing it up. Alexandre Carrier is looking like one of the best acquisitions they’ve had. And with Patrik Laine, Nick Suzuki and Lane Hutson firing on all cylinders, this rebuild is looking promising. Cole Caufield currently sits tied for 8th in goals scored so far this season while Hutson is the number 1 rookie this season with 39 points overall, which also has him sitting in 6th overall in defensemen.
TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button commented on the habs recent success saying;
‘’They’re resilient. They’re a good team, and now they’re performing. And I keep hearing about [the] rebuild. Yeah, they’re going to continue to build. They’re going to continue to try to climb up and make their team stronger. But working along those lines and being a buyer at the deadline are not mutually exclusive.’’
For now, the Canadiens have a grasp on a post season position. It’s no guarantee, but the way they are playing will make it difficult to displace them from that spot. They may not get to the Stanley Cup Finals this year, but they are certainly establishing themselves as a team not to be overlooked. Afterall, rebuilds are a marathon not a sprint.
