The Jaguars and Jets play tonight in a surprisingly important game as far as the AFC playoff picture goes. The home side Jets are 2.5-point favorites while the over/under is currently set at a very low 36.5 points. Besides the playoff implications, tonight’s game will also provide some drama with the quarterback matchup, as it features the top 2 picks in the 2021 Draft.
The Teams
After starting the season at 6-3, New York comes into tonight’s game at 7-7 and on a three-game skid. The team is now one game back of the Dolphins and Chargers for the final wild card spot in the AFC and desperately needs a win to keep pace. The hopes of the franchise will once again be on the back of quarterback Zach Wilson, who will play in Mike White’s absence for the second straight week. The second-year signal caller has had a tumultuous career with the Jets but winning these games down the stretch and getting his team into the playoffs would go a long way in staying with the team next season. With a depleted running back room, Wilson will need to be the difference maker on offence tonight against a very average Jaguars defence.
Unlike the Jets, Jacksonville is hitting New York tonight with a ton of momentum. The Jags are winners in three of their last four games and now just one game back of Tennesee’s lead in the AFC South. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been fantastic since November for the team and was instrumental in their comeback last week against the Cowboys. However, he’s got a tough task tonight playing against the Jets’ pass offence in the cold New York weather. Expect to see a lot of Travis Ettienne at the beginning of the game as well as tight end Evan Engram, who has an incredible 19 catches for more than 200 yards in the last two weeks.
Jaguars and Jets – The Pick
Tonight’s game pits two young teams with little to no big game experience against each other. One is surging and the other is falling, but New York’s home field advantage is real. If the Jets’ defence can stop Trevor Lawrence and the Jags’ offence tonight, the team should come away with a win. I do expect it to be a close game though, so taking the underdog is the safer bet.
