Patriots and Bills – Thursday Preview

(Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports)

Another week in the NFL kicks off tonight with the Patriots and Bills playing in Foxborough. Buffalo is currently a 3.5-point favorite and the over/under is 43.5 in what should be another great divisional tilt. At this time of year, the elements often play a part in New England’s home games, but the weather forecast is calling for a fairly uneventful, cold night.

The Teams

The visiting Bills have been shaky recently but are still tied at the top of the East with an 8-3 record. After a string of tough games by his standards, Josh Allen will look to bounce back in a big way tonight against a team he’s had a lot of success against in the past. Last time these teams met was in last year’s AFC Divisional Playoff round, where the Bills scored a touchdown on every drive on the way to a 47-17 win. Defensively, they’ll be without Von Miller, who’s on the IR with a knee injury. The importance of tonight’s game for Buffalo is not just in the playoff hunt, it’s also a great opportunity to get a statement win against a divisional rival and silence the doubters on primetime.

Mac Jones leads the 6-5 Patriots into a massive home game tonight that could be the difference between missing and making the postseason. In such a competitive conference, the Pats will need all the wins they can get and falling to 6-6 will have them on the outside looking in. It’s even more important when you look ahead in their schedule, as they finish the season off with games against the Bengals, Dolphins and Bills in Buffalo. With such a tough road ahead, Mac Jones and the offence will need to be ready to score tonight. As the Patriots well know, Buffalo can score with the best of them when things are going well.

Patriots and Bills – The Pick

There’s a lot to consider when making the pick tonight and a lot of it is in New England’s favor. Buffalo hasn’t been their best recently. The Patriots are at home and desperate for a win. Mac Jones and the offence looked great last week against Minnesota. However, tonight could be a get-right game for the Bills and we’re going to take them to cover the 3.5 point spread. The main reason for this is New England’s offence going against the Buffalo defence. If they don’t have their best, points will be at a premium tonight for Mac Jones and the Pats.

The pick: BILLS -3.5
